Orihuela Costa Today
Situated in the southernmost corner of the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante, Orihuela Costa has become a haven for foreign travellers in recent years thanks to its near-perfect climate, crystalline beaches, world-class golf courses and sunny enclaves to entice the most intrepid visitors. According to the most recent census, almost half of Orihuela Costa’s permanent residents are foreigners, with second home owners form Europe and Britain making up the vast majority. One of the top choices for holiday homes on the entire Costa Blanca and located just 40 kilometres from the city of Orihuela, the Costa is characterised as a district made up almost entirely of macro urbanizations that each boast their own commercial centres, infrastructure, banks, supermarkets and of course, enviable white, sandy beaches.
Famous for its coves, beaches and golf courses, Orihuela Costa, along its 16 kilometres of coastline, has many of the most prestigious urbanizations on the Costa Blanca, some of them of great international relevance such as Cabo Roig, Villamartín and Campoamor. An amalgamation of cultures and nationalities, walking through the streets of the Orihuela Costa is a veritable feast for the senses, since visitors can breakfast in Germany, have lunch in China and dance the night away with the Irish.
Where is the Orihuela Costa?
A suburb of Orihuela, the Costa includes several famous resorts like La Zenia, Cabo Roig, Dehesa de Campoamor, San Miguel de Salinas, Villamartín, Pilar de Campoverde, Los Dolses, La Fuente and Los Montesinos.Orihuela Costa is situated to the south-west of the city of Torrevieja, along the most southern stretch of eastern Costa Blanca.
The climate
Orihuela Costa has a warm, semi-arid climate with rainfall that generally doesn’t exceed 260 litres per square metre per year. Since the temperatures hover around an average of 18ºC all year round, the area is home to some of the most famous Christmas Day beach parties in all of Europe.
The sea temperatures rarely dips below 16ºC and the Costa enjoys around 300 days of sunshine annually.
Getting to the Orihuela Costa
Alicante Airport is located less than an hour from most of the main urbanizations and is served daily by all of the most popular European and international destinations.
Once you arrive, getting to the Orihuela Costa by road is relatively painless, since all areas are served by the Costa Blanca’s two main arteries – the AP-7 motorway and the N-332 dual carriageway. All of the Orihuela Costa’s most frequented locations are spread out on one side or the other of this road.
Both Alicante and Orihuela City are home to railway stations that service the entire country, while Torrevieja bus station offers regular coaches to the whole coast.
What to do in Orihuela Costa
Without a doubt, the crowning jewel of the Orihuela Costa is its 16 kilometres of pristine beaches, most honoured with a Blue Flag and the “Q” for quality badge. Whether you’re searching for an idyllic and peaceful enclave or the high-octane excitement of water sports, the Costa’s beaches have something for you.
For golf enthusiasts, look no further, as the Orihuela Costa is home to four of the very best courses of the entire Costa Blanca, all of which carry international acclaim.

Shop til you drop in Alicante’s largest shopping centre, Zenia Boulevard, which features more than 150 stores, or mix with the locals at any number of weekly outdoor markets within walking distance.
Visitors will also be spoiled for choice when it comes to eating out and partying the night away. Take a trip to Cabo Roig’s famous ‘Strip’, where you’ll find bars and restaurants from all other the globe, opt for outdoor entertainment in Villamartín Plaza or hit the world-renowned Belgian and Irish pubs in La Zenia for a night you’ll never forget.
There are several festivities and celebrations that take place along the coast throughout the summer period, especially in the August festivities, where the town hall for some years has organised concerts, sports competitions and exhibitions in which both residents participate like the many tourists who visit the area during these dates.
And you simply can’t miss Cabo Roig’s St Patrick’s Day parade, one of the five biggest in Europe and surpassing even most of the major cities in Ireland.
