Your supermarket shop in Spain just got pricier again
Tomatoes, eggs, fish and even wine have all seen noticeable price rises over the past year
Anyone who feels like their weekly supermarket bill in Spain keeps creeping up is probably not imagining it. New figures released by Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) show that several everyday food items have become significantly more expensive over the last 12 months, with some products rising by more than 20%.The sharpest increases have been seen in fruit vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, courgettes and aubergines, which have jumped by 23% compared with April last year. Green legumes including beans, peas and broad beans are also costing much more, with prices up 17.5%.
Eggs have risen by 14.7%, while fresh, chilled and frozen fish has increased by 8.7%. Meat prices have also edged higher, with fresh meat up 5.1%, alongside seafood preparations at 6.7%.
And it is not only food. Wine lovers may also have noticed the difference at the checkout, with grape wine prices rising by 5.6% during the first four months of 2026.
The latest Consumer Price Index data paints a mixed picture overall. While many staples have increased, some products have actually become cheaper.
Tropical fruits including avocados, bananas, mangoes and pineapples have fallen by 20.4% over the last year. Vegetable oils are down by 5.9%, while cereals, pasta and potatoes have also become slightly cheaper. At the same time, fresh berries recorded one of the biggest monthly drops, falling by 26.3%.
Monthly figures between March and April, however, showed another noticeable spike for fruit and vegetables, in general, which rose by almost 12% in just one month. Fresh fish, tropical fruits and leafy vegetables such as lettuce and cauliflower also saw increases.
The figures come just weeks after several major supermarkets in Spain announced price freezes on hundreds of grocery items in an attempt to ease pressure on household budgets.
Meanwhile, many shoppers continue searching for ways to keep food costs down, with price comparisons and online grocery shopping becoming increasingly common among households across Spain.
The INE has also updated the way it calculates inflation in 2026, introducing new products into its “shopping basket”, including avocados and blueberries, while removing more outdated items such as ties and handkerchiefs.
