Why your 2026 New Year's resolutions should begin with your will

The start of a new year is when many of us promise to get organised. We plan to sort paperwork, make sensible decisions and finally deal with the things we keep putting off. One of the most important, and most overlooked, is making a will.
As we head towards the New Year, Heniam & Associates is reminding people to get their affairs in order and get some peace of mind at the same time.
Contrary to popular belief, a will is not just for later life. It is important at any age, especially if you own property, have savings, run a business or have children. Without a valid will in place, your estate may not be dealt with in the way you would expect, and loved ones can be left facing unnecessary stress and legal complications.
In Spain, the rules are even stricter. Under Spanish inheritance law, your estate is split into fixed portions for children and spouses. Without a will, you have little control over how it is distributed.
Heniam & Associates specialises in making the process straightforward. Their multilingual team explains your options clearly, prepares all necessary documents, and makes sure your will complies with Spanish regulations. Whether you need to create a new will or review an existing one, their professional advice will make sure everything is handled correctly.
For those with assets in more than one country, planning is even more important. Heniam provides cross-border estate planning to make sure your will is valid in Spain, the UK and elsewhere. They can also advise on inheritance and estate planning to optimise distribution and consider tax implications. For families looking ahead, they can even recommend funeral planning solutions.
Making a will is not about being pessimistic. It is about getting organised and protecting the people you care about. Life changes like marriage, divorce, buying property, moving country or welcoming a new family member all make reviewing your will a sensible step as well.
If one of your goals for 2026 is to feel more organised and prepared, speaking to Heniam & Associates is a good place to start. They explain things clearly, avoid legal jargon and make sure clients fully understand their options before making decisions.
