Which shops and supermarkets are open in the Region of Murcia on August 15?
Here’s where you can shop on Saturday as the Assumption of the Virgin Mary brings a national holiday across Spain
Saturday August 15 is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, one of Spain’s national public holidays. As it falls on a Saturday this year, many people won’t get an extra day off, but the holiday will still affect opening hours across the Region of Murcia.
Some shops and supermarkets will close completely, while others will open for the whole day or operate on reduced hours. Several shopping centres will also remain fully open, making it possible to shop, eat out or go to the cinema as usual.
If you’re planning a shopping trip, it’s worth checking the opening hours of your local store before setting off, as schedules can vary even within the same chain.
Large stores
Several of the Region’s biggest retailers will be open on August 15.
El Corte Inglés will open its stores in Murcia and Cartagena from 10am to 10pm, according to the company's website.
Ikea is also scheduled to open as normal, with no special changes listed for the holiday.
MediaMarkt will open its stores across the Region, while Leroy Merlin will also be open. The latter recommends checking the opening hours for your individual store before travelling.
Shopping centres
Most of the major shopping centres in the Region of Murcia will be open on Saturday.
Nueva Condomina will be fully operational, meaning its shops, restaurants, leisure facilities, cinema and gym will all be open.
Thader also lists August 15 as an authorised opening day.
La Noria Outlet will open its shops, while Atalayas also includes Saturday on its calendar of public holiday opening days.
Dos Mares in San Pedro del Pinatar is open 365 days a year, apart from January 1 and December 25, when only its leisure and dining areas operate. Its shops will therefore be open on August 15.
Espacio Mediterráneo in Cartagena will also open, with its calendar showing that the centre operates throughout the year apart from December 25, January 1 and January 6.
Parque Almenara in Lorca is also scheduled to open its shops on August 15.
Supermarkets
If you need to stock up on food, several major supermarket chains will be open, although individual opening times can vary.
Mercadona will open some of its supermarkets, with certain stores operating for only part of the day and others opening for longer. Check your local store's hours before heading out.
Lidl will also open stores in the Region, but opening times can vary, so it's best to check the individual supermarket.
Carrefour will open its supermarkets across the Region of Murcia on the public holiday.
Alcampo will also be open, including its store inside Thader shopping centre.
Aldi will operate special opening hours at its supermarkets. The chain recommends checking the opening and closing times for your local store before visiting.
With August 15 falling during the busy summer holiday period, many businesses in tourist areas will remain open despite the public holiday. However, opening times can vary by location, so checking the individual store or shopping centre website is the best way to avoid a wasted journey.
