Alicante is the fastest-growing airport in Spain for international passengers
Alicante Airport is celebrating yet another remarkable achievement. Recent data from the Ministry of Tourism reveals that the
Costa Blanca airport has recorded the highest year-on-year growth in international passengers among all airports in Spain, thanks to its impressive numbers this July.
With a staggering increase of 16.1% compared to July 2023, Alicante Airport welcomed almost two million international passengers this year. This phenomenal growth solidifies its position as the fifth-busiest airport in Spain for international travel.
According to Turespaña data,
Spain welcomed 11.2 million international passengers in July, an increase of 8.6% compared to the previous year. Among these travellers, Alicante's Miguel Hernández Airport played a pivotal role, attracting a significant portion of this business.
The airport's success is further highlighted when comparing it to other top Spanish bases. Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas takes the lead as the only airport exceeding two million arrivals, followed by Barcelona, Palma and
Málaga, each with impressive numbers in their own right.
Valencia, another rising star, secures the eighth position, showcasing the strong performance of the
Valencian Community in the aviation sector.
Additionally, Alicante airport's popularity among Dutch travellers cannot be understated, with the Netherlands experiencing slightly higher growth than the UK. Alicante's ability to cater to a diverse range of markets, including classic and emerging destinations, has contributed to its impressive year-on-year growth, according to Aena.
Another interesting aspect of Alicante's success is the preference for low-cost airlines among its passengers. Of the nearly 882,750 international travellers, an overwhelming majority chose low-cost carriers, with 752,585 opting for budget carriers. This trend positions Alicante as the fourth-highest airport in Spain for low-cost airline usage.
