Two British men face 10 years in jail over Mallorca bar attack
Prosecutors say the pair used broken glass to injure three people after staff refused to serve them more drinks
Two British tourists are facing up to 10 years in prison each after a violent incident at a Palmanova Indian restaurant, in Mallorca, last summer. The men, aged 24 and 34, are accused of assaulting three people with broken glass around 2am on June 22 last year.Prosecutors are also seeking €15,450 euros in compensation for the victims, whose injuries ranged from serious to lasting. The case will go before a Criminal Court in Palma, with security camera footage expected to play a key role.
The trouble began when a female staff member refused to serve the men more drinks. According to court documents, the pair had been verbally harassing customers and employees with derogatory comments and disruptive behaviour. When she stood her ground, they pushed her to the floor. She hit her head and cut her leg on broken glass scattered nearby.
A male colleague who stepped in to help was struck from behind with a glass, leaving him disoriented. A customer trying to calm things down was then hit in the neck by shards of broken glass. During the struggle, one of the men shattered a glass in his hand. All three victims needed hospital treatment, including stitches at Son Espases Hospital in Palma.
Officers from the Guardia Civil in Calvià arrested the pair shortly afterwards. A spokesman said at the time: “Officers sent to Mallorca as part of summer reinforcements were carrying out routine security patrols when they were alerted a mass fight was occurring in a premises near to where they were. They saw a man covered in blood brandishing a broken bottle who was attacking others present.”
The 24-year-old, found holding the broken bottle, and his 33-year-old companion were remanded in custody on charges of attempted homicide. The victims’ injuries were described as affecting vital areas, including the neck, head, arms and legs.
The trial will revisit the chaotic early morning scene caught on CCTV, as prosecutors argue the men’s actions went far beyond a simple dispute over drinks.
