Travel disruption this April as Spanish train strike continues
Minimum rail services will operate across Spain on Tuesday April 1
Despite the fact that an agreement was reached between the Ministry of Transport and the main train driver unions to effectively halt the industrial action, members of the CGT railway union are ploughing ahead with their plans to strike on Tuesday April 2, claiming that the new contract which has been signed “guarantees absolutely nothing.”
The organising unions have also announced that they will hold public rallies at the Sevilla and Malaga train stations at 11am on Tuesday and on April 3, there will be a demonstration in front of the Ministry of Transport in Madrid.
The cause of unrest stems from the upcoming transfer of management of the Rodalies train company to the Catalan government, which has sparked labour concerns and political tensions. However, Renfe, Spain’s largest train company and Adif, the government agency responsible for managing the railways, came to an agreement with the Ministry in March.
They have described the refusal of the CGT union to sign this agreement as “typical of a kindergarten.”
While Tuesday’s work stoppages won’t have as much impact as an all-out strike, Renfe is still warning passengers across the country to expect some delays or disruptions.
The strike will affect all of Spain on Tuesday April 1, 2025, from midnight to 11.59pm. According to the Ministry of Transport, the minimum essential services for Renfe will be as follows:
Cercanías:
- 75% of the usual service during rush hour and 50% in the Basque Country (from 6am to 9am from 1.30pm/2pm to 3.30pm/4pm and from 6.30pm to 8.30pm).
- 50% of the current service and 25% in the Basque Country.
Medium Distance:
- 65% of the usual service.
High Speed/Long Distance:
- 72% of regular services.
Freight:
- 24% of scheduled service.
