Travel back in time as Los Alcázares brings its history to life
New technology will let visitors explore historic sites as they looked centuries ago
Visitors to Los Alcázares will soon be able to step back in time and discover what some of the town’s most important historic sites looked like centuries ago.
The Town Council has allocated €218,713.63 to a series of digital tourism initiatives designed to make the municipality’s heritage and attractions easier to discover.
One of the main additions will be an augmented reality platform offering virtual recreations of the Balneario de La Concha, la Torre del Rame and la Villa Romana.
Visitors will be able to see how the sites looked at different stages of their history, while learning more about the people who lived and worked there and how the locations changed over the years.
The content will be available through the new Los Alcázares Tourism website, which will bring together many of the municipality’s new digital services.
A virtual tourism office has also been launched to help visitors plan their trips and make the most of their stay. It provides information about the Mar Menor, gastronomy, heritage, sports, nature and events, while allowing users to create itineraries based on their interests.
The platform will also feature virtual tours, interactive displays and AI-powered assistants capable of answering questions 24/7 in several languages.
Digital information screens are being installed around the municipality too, giving visitors details about beaches, routes, restaurants, activities, tourist experiences, heritage sites and cultural events.
Councillor for Digitalisation, Innovation, Transparency and Citizen Participation Eufemio Pacheco Rocamora explained that the aim is to put information where visitors need it while highlighting attractions that are less well known. The system should also encourage tourists to explore more of Los Alcázares rather than concentrating around the busiest areas.
Technology is reaching the beach as well, with Las Salinas being developed as a smart nautical beach. A large screen provides real-time information about temperature, wind, weather conditions and the state of the Mar Menor. The information will be useful to swimmers and people enjoying sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and paddle surfing.
Mayor Mario Pérez Cervera explained that the overall aim is to use new technology to improve public services and make it easier for residents and visitors to discover what Los Alcázares has to offer throughout the year.
The projects are being financed through Next Generation EU funds under Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
