Traditional bathing station restored in Santiago de la Ribera
The Town Hall of San Javier is committed to re-creating these facilities which were first used in the early 20th century
The beach of Santiago de la Ribera will boast a new old attraction this summer now that work has been completed on a project to create a bathing station like those which were popular in the early part of the 20th century, when it was considered indecorous for ladies to enjoy the water of the Mar Menor from the beach and preferred to do so from a few metres out in the water.
This bathing station will be fully functional once it is completed in approximately 10 days, according to Mayor José Miguel Luengo and Councillor Estíbaliz Masegosa, who visited the site on Monday 25th May, and is built along the lines of those which were common along the shore in the past. It is made of pine wood, although one of the concessions to modern times is that a lift is being installed to facilitate bathing for those of limited mobility.
The project has required an investment of 142,000 euros, after a similar project was first mooted as long ago as 2019 (the Mayor explains that five years were then spent waiting for the requisite permits to be issued by the Coasts department of the national government for the restoration of the Balneario de Los Arcos to go ahead).
Other such bathing stations are also due to open for the summer in the near future.
