Torrevieja's new bus fares revealed: €1.35 a ride and free travel for over-65s
The Ayuntamiento has given the green light to a fresh fare system that rewards regulars, pensioners and tourists alike
If you're a regular bus user in Torrevieja, or you're hoping to become one once the new urban transport network rolls out, there's good news on the horizon. The Ayuntamiento has just given initial approval to the ordinance that will set out exactly what we'll all be paying to get around town once the new municipal bus service launches.The vote went through with PP and VOX backing it, while PSOE and Sueña Torrevieja abstained. It's one of the last big administrative boxes to tick before the new service actually starts running, and it brings with it a much more generous and flexible pricing structure than what's come before.
Let's start with the headline figure: a standard single ticket will cost €1.35, valid for one trip on any of the city's bus routes. But the real savings kick in if you're a frequent traveller. A Multi-Trip Bus Pass gets you 10 journeys for €9, or 20 for €18, working out at just €0.90 per ride.
There's also a Special Multi-Trip Pass aimed at those who need a bit more support, bringing the cost down to €0.65 per journey. This one's reserved for under-26s, large families and anyone who's been out of work long-term, so long as they meet the criteria.
For those who hop on the bus daily, the Bono 30 offers unlimited travel for 30 consecutive days for a flat €38, a handy option if you're commuting regularly around the city.
Visitors haven't been forgotten either. A new Tourist Card will let holidaymakers travel as much as they like for either three days (€8) or seven days (€16).
But perhaps the most welcome news for many readers will be the Gold Pass. Anyone over 65 who's been registered as living in Torrevieja for at least a year, along with pensioners and people with a disability of 33% or more meeting the same residency rule, will be able to travel completely free, all year round.
Beyond the prices, the new service promises more routes, better frequency and wider coverage, linking the centre with La Mata, hospitals, schools and shopping areas. The fleet will largely switch to hybrid and electric vehicles too, so it's a greener way to get about.
The ordinance now heads into a public consultation period before it's finalised, with the new fares coming into force once the service officially launches.
