Torrevieja rescuers free rare violet stingray after rocky stranding
Local police unit and nautical club sailors successfully return her to the sea
A violet stingray (Pteroplatytrygon violacea), not often seen around Torrevieja, was found alive but stranded on rocks on Monday December 8. Luckily, she was spotted and helped in time.The call came into 112 and the Torrevieja Policía Local Environmental Unit (UMAT) arrived quickly. They worked with technicians from Oceanogràfic's ARCA del Mar and the Ayuntamiento's Environment Department to assess her condition. Deciding she had a good chance, they chose to release her back into the sea.
The task wasn't simple, as there was only limited knowledge on treating this species, but with help from sailors at the Real Club Náutico de Torrevieja, the UMAT team managed it beautifully. She swam off strongly once freed - a real relief for everyone involved.
This rescue shows the quiet dedication of the local teams in looking after coastal wildlife, turning a tough moment into a positive one.
