Torremolinos beaches get smart traffic lights to warn you when the sun gets dangerous
Four beaches on the Costa del Sol have installed real-time UV radiation monitors to help beachgoers protect their skin
Anyone who has spent a long summer on the Costa del Sol knows the feeling. You settle onto the sand, the sky is blue, there is a pleasant breeze, and before you know it you have been out in the sun for three hours without reapplying sun cream. It does not feel that intense. But the UV rays do not care how comfortable you feel.Torremolinos has come up with a practical answer to that problem. The Ayuntamiento has installed smart ultraviolet radiation monitors on four of its beaches, giving anyone on the coast a clear, immediate visual guide to how strong the UV rays actually are at any given moment.
The devices are now up and running on La Carihuela, Bajondillo, Playamar and Los Álamos, and they work in a refreshingly straightforward way. A colour-coded display, much like a standard traffic light, shows the current UV radiation level in real time. No app required, no technical scale to interpret. You simply glance at it and know whether it is time to reach for the factor 50.
It sounds simple, but the health case behind it is serious. The Costa del Sol experiences some of the highest ultraviolet radiation levels in Europe for much of the year, and particularly through spring and summer. Prolonged exposure without adequate protection is directly linked to sunburn, premature skin ageing and skin cancer, and the risk is easy to underestimate on days when a sea breeze makes the heat feel manageable.
For older adults especially, whose skin is more vulnerable to UV damage, having a visible and impossible-to-miss reminder of current conditions is genuinely valuable.
The initiative places Torremolinos among the first municipalities on the Andalucían coast to adopt this kind of preventative technology, and forms part of the Ayuntamiento's broader smart beach strategy under its "Torremolinos, Smart Paradise" tourism plan. The project has been fully funded by the European Union through its Next-GenerationEU programme.
It is a small thing, in some ways. But on a coastline that welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors every summer, a well-placed traffic light could make a real difference.
