The Pósito, the old granary of Yecla
The 16th-century building stands alongside the tourist office in the Plaza Mayor in Yecla
The old granary (Edificio del Pósito, or Alhorín) in the Plaza Mayor in Yecla, the square where the tourist office and the Town Hall also stand, is a Renaissance building dating from the mid-16th century. Other buildings in the same square include the Town Hall, the Palacio de los Alarcos and the clock tower, all of them grouped around this single square which for centuries has been at the centre of life in Yecla.
It is a two-storey building cut in ashlar stone, with a porch and series of five arches (four on the façade and one on the interior) resting on columns and Tuscan pilasters. Originally, the granary building was responsible for regulating grain supply to bakers and others, and over the years it also became a seed store.
At the end of the 18th century it had outlived its original purpose, and by the mid-19th century was in use as a school of public instruction.
If visiting Yecla don’t forget to make sure one of your first ports of call is the tourist office (Plaza Mayor, 1, telephone 968 754104, email turismo@yecla.es).
