The people of Los Alcázares cross their fingers as rain threatens the Mar Menor area
Council workers have been ensuring drainage systems in Los Alcázares are as free from blockages as possible
The Town Hall and residents of Los Alcázares are, understandably, more nervous than most when the clouds darken and rain threatens the Region of Murcia, with the last few years having seen far too many incidents involving serious flooding in the town (the most recent being the one in December 2025).
For this reason, council workers have been busy this week ensuring that the vital drainage and sewage network are as free from blockages as possible, removing any waste from the streets which might cause clogging or the formation of large puddles.
So, as the rain forecast begins to fall on Thursday morning, the hopes are that any menacing downpours can somehow avoid Los Alcázares and the flat agricultural land of the Campo de Cartagena, from where runoff water makes its way to the Mar Menor via the town. The doubts should begin to disperse at around lunchtime on Friday, when State meteorological agency Aemet is forecasting that the rain starts to disappear.
