The best places in Spain to experience the 2026 total solar eclipse
Millions will look skyward on August 12 as Spain experiences its first total solar eclipse in more than a century
For the first time in more than a century, a total solar eclipse will be visible from parts of the country, drawing astronomers, photographers and curious travellers from across Europe. Hotels in some areas are already reporting increased demand, and with good reason. A total eclipse is one of nature's most extraordinary spectacles.
The key word, however, is total.
Many areas of Spain, including Murcia, Alicante and Barcelona, will experience a very deep partial eclipse. Impressive as that sounds, eclipse enthusiasts will tell you there is a world of difference between 99% and 100%. Only within the path of totality will observers see the Sun's corona, experience the sudden darkness and notice the dramatic drop in temperature.
With that in mind, here are ten of the best places in Spain to witness the event.
1. Playa de Palma, Mallorca
Mallorca is expected to be one of the most popular destinations for eclipse tourism. The long stretch of coastline at Playa de Palma offers unobstructed views towards the western horizon, making it an excellent place to watch the eclipse unfold as the Sun approaches sunset.
2. Playa de la Malvarrosa, Valencia
Valencia sits directly in the path of totality and its famous city beach combines easy access with excellent viewing opportunities. Arrive early though, as huge crowds are expected.
3. La Muntanyeta dels Sants, Valencia
This small hill overlooking the rice fields of the Albufera Natural Park is already attracting attention from experienced eclipse observers. Its elevated position provides clear views across a remarkably flat landscape.
4. Cullera
Located just south of Valencia, Cullera lies close to the centre of the eclipse path. The combination of coastal scenery and open horizons makes it one of the strongest options on mainland Spain.
5. Ebro Delta, Tarragona
The Ebro Delta's vast open wetlands offer some of the clearest sightlines in the country. With very few buildings, trees or mountains blocking the view, it’s likely to become one of the most photographed eclipse locations in Spain.
6. Peñíscola, Castellón
Watching the eclipse beside one of Spain's most picturesque coastal castles could be hard to beat. The dramatic setting adds an extra dimension to what is already a rare event.
7. Onda Castle, Castellón
Perched above the surrounding countryside, Onda Castle offers panoramic views and has already been highlighted by local authorities as a prime observation point for the eclipse.
8. Sierra Calderona viewpoints
The mountains north of Valencia are home to several spectacular miradores. Higher ground often provides better visibility and can help avoid some of the haze that occasionally develops near the coast during August.
9. Vilanova i la Geltrú
Located south of Barcelona, this town sits close to the northern edge of the path of totality. It’s likely to attract many visitors who wouldn’t get as good a view if they stayed in the Catalan capital.
10. Ibiza
While Mallorca may receive most of the attention, Ibiza also offers exceptional viewing opportunities, particularly from its west-facing coastline where the eclipsed Sun will appear above the horizon shortly before sunset.
What about Murcia?
The Region of Murcia won't experience totality, but it will come very close.
For anyone determined to witness totality, the good news is that some of the closest locations are only a few hours away by car. Valencia, Cullera and several parts of Castellón are likely to become popular destinations for Murcian residents looking to make a day of it.
Spain won't see another total solar eclipse of this significance for many years. If the skies stay clear, August 12 could become one of the most memorable evenings many people will ever spend looking up at the sky.
