Tenerife rolls out the red carpet for bigger spending British visitors
Island's tourism board showcases golf, gourmet food and luxury stays to top travel agents
Tenerife is setting its sights on a rather different kind of holidaymaker. Turismo de Tenerife has just wrapped up a six day showcase designed to tempt higher spending British and European visitors away from the usual sun and sand routine, and towards something a little more upmarket.More than thirty international travel agents took part in the programme, which ran from Tuesday September 22 to Sunday September 27. Alongside British representatives, there were travel professionals from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, the Czech Republic and mainland Spain too, all getting a proper taste of what the island can offer beyond its traditional resorts.
Rather than the familiar beach holiday pitch, the focus this time was firmly on the finer things. Agents were taken to see a selection of Tenerife's hotels and attractions, with visits built around gastronomy, nature, culture and golf. It's all part of a broader push to diversify the island's tourism offering and shift the conversation from simply counting visitor numbers to focusing on the value each holidaymaker brings.
The timing makes sense too. British holidaymakers remain Tenerife's biggest international market by some distance, so there's clearly an appetite to encourage that same loyal audience to spend a bit more while they're there, whether that's on a round of golf, a memorable meal out, or a stay somewhere a touch more indulgent than the average package deal.
It wasn't just about showing off the scenery either. The agents also had the chance to meet directly with local tourism businesses, giving Tenerife's hoteliers, restaurateurs and experience providers a genuine opportunity to build relationships with the very people who sell holidays across some of Europe's biggest markets.
The whole initiative was organised through Turismo de Tenerife, with plenty of local businesses getting involved along the way. If it works as intended, it could mean more premium options popping up across the island in the coming years, alongside everything holidaymakers already know and love about Tenerife.
So next time you're planning a trip, don't be surprised if there's a little more on offer beyond the beach towel and sun lounger. Tenerife seems keen to prove it has plenty of other tricks up its sleeve too.
