Spanish tax return 2025/2026: Key dates and complete guide to avoid missing deadlines
The income tax campaign, or Declaración de la Renta in Spain, starts a day early this year on April 8
Tax season is rolling around again and April marks the start of the 2025 income tax return campaign (Declaración de la Renta), even though you'll be filing it in 2026. The process can be completed online, by phone or in person as long as you book an appointment in advance.
The first period of the tax calendar has already closed on January 30, covering things like employee and professional withholdings, quarterly rental withholding declarations and income from movable capital for the fourth quarter of 2025. But there are still plenty of important dates to keep track of.
When does the 2025 tax return process begin?
Online filing for the 2025 tax year opens on April 8 and the deadline is June 30, 2026.
Filing by phone
From May 6 to June 30, 2026, the Tax Agency can prepare your 2025 income tax return over the phone. You'll need to schedule an appointment, which can be requested between April 29 and June 29.
Filing in person
The Tax Agency can prepare your 2025 income tax return at their offices from June 1 to June 30, 2026. An appointment is required and the booking period runs from May 29 to June 29.
To get help from the Tax Agency either by phone or in person, you need to make an appointment online at the Tax Agency's electronic office or by calling these numbers:
- Automatic telephone: 91 535 73 26 / 901 12 12 24
- Income tax appointment service: 91 553 00 71 / 901 22 33 44
Some dates are still to be confirmed, including when you can check your tax data (normally available from mid-March) and request a reference number.
Other key dates for your income tax return
June 25, 2026 is the deadline for filing your income tax return (and wealth tax) if you owe money and want to pay by direct debit. This only applies if your return shows you owe the Tax Agency something and you've chosen to have it debited straight from your bank account. If you're getting a refund or paying by bank transfer instead of direct debit, this deadline doesn't apply to you.
If you opted to pay in instalments, the second payment is due on November 5, 2026. You can't push this second instalment beyond that date.
The Tax Agency has six months from the filing deadline to issue any refunds. After that, you'll be entitled to interest on the amount owed to you.
