Spain weekend weather July 9-12: Heatwave breaks, but the east will still hit 40°C
Temperatures will drop across most of the country as a DANA moves in, but eastern Spain looks set to stay well above 35°C
Heat warnings on Thursday July 9
After
several days of brutal heat, Spain's mainland is about to get some relief. Well, most of it anyway. A band of cooler air will start pushing in from the Atlantic over the next few days, though it won't reach everywhere at once, and eastern towns in particular are in for a few more scorching days before things properly calm down.
Thursday July 9
This Thursday will officially be the last day of the current heatwave, although you wouldn't necessarily know it everywhere. A mass of cooler air will start easing in from the Atlantic, bringing temperatures down across Extremadura, the western half of Castilla-La Mancha and much of
Andalucia. Western Galicia, parts of the Mediterranean coast and the Canary Islands will see similar drops.
Plenty of Spain will still be sweltering, mind you. Most of the country and the islands will sit somewhere between 36°C and 38°C, while the Ebro and Tagus valleys, parts of
Valencia and
Murcia, and low-lying areas of Aragon and Catalonia could still hit 40-42°C.
Orange alerts for high temperatures will stay in force across Andalucia, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Madrid, the Region of Murcia, Navarra and the Valencian Community.
Friday July 10
Temperatures will fall almost everywhere, with the drop most noticeable across central and eastern Spain. The southern coast of Valencia could see temperatures fall by 6-8°C in a single day.
Navarra, Aragon and Catalonia will hold onto the heat regardless, staying above 37-38°C, and the Balearic Islands could still reach 38-40°C.
Orange alerts will remain in place for the Balearics, Aragon and Catalonia, while everywhere else drops to yellow or loses its warning altogether.
Saturday July 11
The DANA will shift into a position that draws in a southerly flow, pushing temperatures back up in the Cantabrian region and parts of central Spain. Most of the interior and the Balearic Islands will see highs of 36-39°C, and parts of the Ebro valley, along with the upper Guadalquivir on occasion, could touch 40°C.
Sunday July 12
The DANA is expected to drift towards the northwest, bringing another drop in temperatures to Galicia and the western half of the country. Further east, it'll be a different story. The southern plateau, the Ebro Valley, inland Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Murcia and eastern Andalucia will all stay above 37-39°C, along with the Balearic Islands, while temperatures further west could dip below 35°C.
Looking beyond the weekend, there's some uncertainty over how the low will develop from here, but next week looks set to be warmer than usual in the east and a touch cooler in parts of the west.
