Renfe offers free changes and refunds as weather alerts disrupt southeast travel
Passengers travelling through Valencia, Murcia and Almería can alter or cancel tickets at no extra cost during the Aemet alert
Renfe has confirmed that passengers affected by severe weather warnings in parts of southeastern Spain can change or cancel their train tickets free of charge, as unsettled conditions continue to affect travel plans.The state rail operator said the measure applies to journeys that start, end or pass through the Valencian Community, the Region of Murcia and the province of Almería. The decision follows a weather alert issued by Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, for these areas on Sunday.
In a statement, Renfe explained that the flexibility is designed to make things easier for travellers caught up in the disruption. Tickets for affected services can be amended or refunded without penalty, giving passengers the option to postpone their journey until conditions improve. “Customers may change or cancel their tickets at no cost if their journey is linked to the areas under weather alert,” the company said.
Renfe added that it has been contacting passengers directly since Saturday to ensure they are aware of their options. Notifications have been sent by SMS and email, and information has also been shared through the company’s social media channels. One source close to the operator said the aim was to give people “clear choices, as early as possible”, particularly those travelling for family or essential reasons.
The announcement comes at a time when passenger rights and compensation have been firmly in the spotlight. Only weeks ago, Renfe confirmed plans to bring back more generous compensation for train delays from January 2026, following widespread criticism of current arrangements. While that change is still some way off, this latest move offers immediate relief for travellers dealing with circumstances beyond their control.
For now, Renfe is urging passengers with journeys in the affected regions to check messages from the company and review their travel plans carefully. As weather conditions evolve, further updates are expected, but the operator stressed that flexibility will remain in place for as long as the alerts continue.
