Region of Murcia climbs to number two spot in modest Spanish building boom
Housing demand and tourism investment are driving a surge that secures Murcia one of the top positions in Spain’s building sector
The Region of Murcia is proving once again that construction is one of its key economic engines. New figures from Nalanda, a global leader in business activity coordination, show that while the number of projects across Spain as a whole dipped by 1.8% in the first half of the year, Murcia is moving firmly in the opposite direction.
The Region registered the second-highest growth in the country, just behind La Rioja, with a 31% jump compared to the same period last year.
Most of these projects were smaller-scale developments worth up to €500,000, which made up three quarters of the total. But the standout growth came from mid-range projects between €1 and €10 million, which doubled compared to 2024.
This growth is especially welcome news at a time when Spain faces a widespread housing shortage, but the building boom in the Region is not limited to residential projects. Tourism demand is soaring, and investors are responding. Over the next three years, 16 new hotels are planned for Murcia, bringing more than 700 additional beds to the market.
For industry leaders, the data underline just how important construction has become for Murcia’s economy.
"These data confirm the strength of the regional construction sector, with a dynamic business network capable of generating investment and employment. At the same time, they demonstrate that, amid the housing shortage and the labour shortage affecting the sector, construction has enormous potential to continue leading the regional economy and respond to major social problems, provided we have the necessary human resources to undertake all the projects that society demands," said José Hernández, president of the Regional Federation of Construction Entrepreneurs of Murcia (Frecom).
At the national level, Catalonia continues to top the list, accounting for nearly 20% of all construction projects offered up to June. Andalucia (14.7%), Madrid (11%) and the Valencian Community (10.4%) also rank high.
But when it comes to growth, only La Rioja and Murcia are seeing such strong surges, with the Canary Islands close behind at 19.8%.
According to Ricardo Muriel, CMO of Nalanda, the "first half of the year confirms a stable trend in the construction sector in Spain, with a volume of projects offered similar to the previous year. This suggests that demand is holding up, reflecting sustained activity. If this trend continues, it could provide a solid foundation for investment and job creation."
