Rare Blue Moon to light up Spanish skies this May
Skywatchers across Spain will get two chances to see a full moon in May, with the second known as a Blue Moon
The night sky over Spain is set to put on a rare show this May, with not one but two full moons appearing in the same month in what’s known as a Blue Moon.
The Moon has fascinated people for centuries, from its changing phases to the unusual events that occasionally take place. One of the most talked about is the Blue Moon, a phenomenon that only happens every two or three years.
Despite its name, the Moon will not actually turn blue. The term is simply used when two full moons fall within the same calendar month, or in some cases when a season includes four full moons, with the third taking the title.
In 2026, the first full moon of May will appear on Thursday May 1, followed by the second on Sunday May 31, which is the one classified as the Blue Moon.
Events like this are relatively uncommon, which is why they tend to attract attention from skywatchers. The timing of full moons can vary slightly depending on your location, but the spectacle itself will be visible from anywhere with clear skies.
The Blue Moon also means that 2026 will have a total of 13 full moons instead of the usual 12.

For anyone hoping to make the most of it, the best way to enjoy a full moon is to head somewhere with as little light pollution as possible. Rural areas or open natural spaces will give you the clearest view, especially if you check the exact time the moon reaches its peak in your area.
