Rain and wind return: Spain weather forecast February 20-23
Temperatures will drop by as much as 7°C in large parts of Spain over the coming weekend
Weather outlook on Saturday February 22
A significant change in the weather is expected to sweep across Spain as we head into the weekend, bringing with it a drop in temperatures of up to 7°C and a return of the rain.
On
Thursday February 20, a high-pressure system will bring clear skies and rising temperatures to most of the country, with the mercury reaching a pleasant 23°C in parts of
Murcia and
Sevilla. However, this respite will be short-lived, as the front begins to make its presence felt in the northwest of Galicia, bringing light rain and cloudy skies.
As the front moves eastward, the weather will become more unsettled and the real change will set in on Friday February 21.
Rain will become more widespread, with the west and central regions experiencing the most significant downpours. The Galician community, the Cantabrian mountain range and the central system will be particularly affected, with heavy rain expected in these areas.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated an orange weather warning in Galicia for rough seas, torrential rain and strong winds, while yellow alerts are in place in Asturias, Cantabria and Castilla y Leon for gusts.
Unfortunately, the rain will continue to move eastward over the weekend, with the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands experiencing their first downpours on Saturday February 22.
The rain should start to ease off as the afternoon progresses but there’s still a chance of widespread, light showers well into the evening.
Temperatures will plummet on Friday and Saturday, with some areas experiencing a drop of up to 7°C. However, the Mediterranean coast will buck this trend, with temperatures rising to exceed 22°C in some areas.
Sunday February 23 is expected to be a much calmer day, with only occasional and scattered rain showers in the north and east. The rest of the country will experience clearer skies, with cold air and frost in the early hours of the morning.
However, the temperatures will not be unusually cold, and the frosts will be typical of this time of year.
Looking ahead to next week, temperatures are expected to rise significantly with a return to mild and sunny conditions. The only exception will be Galicia, which will continue to experience rain on Monday February 24.
