The 2-2 draw after 120 minutes set the stage for a nail-biting finish, with Portugal holding their nerve as goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved from Alvaro Morata before Ruben Neves scored the decisive penalty.Cristiano Ronaldo, who had equalised in the 61st minute with his 138th international goal, was subbed off before extra time and watched the shootout in tears from the touchline.
