Plaza Beato Andrés Hibernón is a small square in the heart of Murcia’s tapas and tascas bar area, at the point where the Calel Saavedra Fajardo (the “calle de las tascas”) becomes the Calle Santo Cristo as it joins Calle Andrés Baquero on the west and Calle Doctor Fleming on the east.
Lying next to the Iglesia de La Merced, this is a small plaza with benches under the shade of some trees, and in the western half of the square are a couple of outside terraces belonging to two of the many bars in the vicinity.
This is a hugely popular area with students from the University and is a busy and buzzing zone of the city with plenty of well-priced bars and restaurants for those who enjoy tapas and dining al fresco.
On the southern side of the Plaza Beato Andrés Hibernón stands the indoor market which is used by many of the locals, who prefer the atmosphere here to that of the small supermarkets which abound in this part of the city centre, and just 100 metres or so further south is the much larger Plaza de Europa. Other nearby squares in this part of Murcia include the Plaza de Santa Eulalia, the Plaza Cetina and the Plaza de Santo Domingo.
It’s well worth stopping off to look at the church which backs onto this plaza and spotting the Virgin with the crooked neck: an interesting and quirky little tale. Click Iglesia de La Merced
