One of Murcia's seaside towns nominated as among the best beach destinations in Spain
National Geographic readers have shortlisted the town alongside some of Spain's most popular coastal destinations

As temperatures start to rise and the first warm, spring-like days get people thinking about beach trips again, attention naturally turns to some of the best coastal spots in Spain. Around this time of year, magazines such as National Geographic begin writing about top beach destinations across the country, and it’s no surprise that the Region of Murcia, with its beautiful coastline, often features.
It also won’t come as a surprise to anyone familiar with the area that the town in question that has made it onto the list is Águilas. It has been nominated in the ‘best beach destination in Spain’ category, putting it alongside other well-known coastal areas from around the country.
The awards, which form part of National Geographic’s Readers’ Awards, include nearly 100 finalists across a range of categories, from travel destinations to hotels and tourism projects. In total, seven places are competing in the beach destination category, including Calvià, Costa de Ferrol, Torroella de Montgrí, Orihuela, Llanes, L’Ametlla de Mar and, of course, Águilas.
Águilas was chosen for its coastline near Cabo Cope and the Sierra de Almenara, with so many standout beaches and hidden coves. This part of the coast has something for everyone, it’s popular for water sports and snorkelling, but as it is so pretty, it is a great spot for a quiet day by the sea.
Like much of the Murcia coastline, it also has a more relaxed feel compared to some of Spain’s larger, busier resorts. The Region is known for its long beaches, beach bars and calm waters in certain areas, making it a popular choice throughout the warmer months.
The final results of the Readers’ Awards will be announced later this month. For Águilas, the nomination once again puts it in the spotlight as one of the Region of Murcia’s most popular coastal destinations.
