One Murcia spot ranks among Spain's favourite places for a caña

A new nationwide ranking based on the opinions and experiences of thousands of people has placed the city's best-known square among the country's favourite spots to enjoy a cold beer

Murcia's Plaza de las Flores has been named one of the best places in Spain to enjoy a summer beer after making the top 10 in a new nationwide ranking.

The popular square in the centre of Murcia city came in tenth place on the list, which was put together using the searches, reviews and experiences of thousands of people.

Known for its busy terraces and traditional bars, Plaza de las Flores is one of the city's favourite places to stop for a cold caña and a bite to eat, as the warmer weather returns, terraces fill up and evenings stretch long into the night. The ranking also mentions El Pulpo, one of the area's best-known bars.

León's Barrio Húmedo took the top spot thanks to its famous free tapas, which are served with every drink, and its tradition of pouring beer into smaller glasses to keep it colder for longer.

Madrid's La Latina came second, while Granada's El Realejo and Albaicín neighbourhoods were third. Logroño's Calle Laurel, Seville's Plaza de la Alfalfa and Plaza del Salvador, Bilbao's Casco Viejo, San Sebastián's Parte Vieja, Zaragoza's El Tubo and Salamanca's city centre and Van Dyck area also made the top 10.

Although each destination has its own take on beer and tapas, whether that's pintxos in the north or generous free tapas in Granada, they're all places where spending an afternoon or evening on a terrace is part of the experience, and a big part of life in Spain.

For anyone who knows Murcia, Plaza de las Flores is hardly a surprise addition. The square has long been one of the city's best-loved spots for a drink, a tapa and a meal outside.
