Old bathing jetty restored and reopened in Santiago de la Ribera

The 100-year-old original was destroyed in the heavy storms of 2019

Another of the historic bathing stations and jetties which marked the early years of tourism on the shore of the Mar Menor has been restored, following a joint project between the regional government of Murcia and the Town Hall of San Javier.

The originally jetty alongside the Playa de Colón was built by the Viudes family in 1925 and survived until the severe storms of 2019, and although the reconstruction is not a fully faithful one it has been rebuilt so that it blends into the surroundings while at the same time being fully accessible for bathers. The concession for managing the jetty now passes to the Town Hall, and on it is perched the statue of the boy fisherman (El Niño Pescador), created especially by the sculptor Manuel Páez.

Attending the official opening of the jetty were the regional minister for Tourism, Carmen Conesa, Mayor José Miguel Luengo, councillor Estíbaliz Masegosa and various members of the Viudes family.

The new Viudes jetty, alongside the Club Náutico, is open to all and features a pergola, benches, steps down to the water and a special amphibious bathing chair.
