Official recognition for the Berber Pirate Raids fiestas of Los Alcázares
The fiestas of Los Alcázares celebrate their 25th anniversary this Easter Week
Just a couple of days before the start of the great annual Fiestas de las Incursions Berberiscas in Los Alcázares, during which the town centre is taken over by a massive medieval market and tens of thousands of visitors arrive to enjoy the street entertainments and party atmosphere, the event has been awarded Regional Tourist Interest status by the regional government of the Region of Murcia.
Many of the annual fiestas in Murcia are deep-rooted traditions stretching back generations, but this one is a relatively recent addition to the calendar, with the 25th anniversary being celebrated this year. However, it has already grown to such proportions that between 2nd and 5th April more than 200 stands and stalls will be open for business in the town as it recalls the period in its history when the area lived in constant fear of the frequent pirate incursions launched by the Berbers of north Africa.
As Mayor Mario Pérez Cervera, this official recognition of the fiestas is a source of great pride and a just reward for the tireless efforts of many local residents over the last few years, and will provide the impetus for continued growth in the future.
Details of the programme of events for this year’s fiestas can be found here.
