November 30 Celestina, a clown-performed classical tragedy in Jumilla
A modern adaptation of one of the great works of Spanish literature at the Teatro Vico in Jumilla
La Celestina is one of the great classics of Spanish literature, generally attributed to Fernando de Rojas and first published in 1499. It tells the story of the lovers Calisto and Melibea and achieved both fame and notoriety due to the carnal nature of the tale, although the language used is that of courtly love.
This, though, is a rather different adaptation of the work widely held to have marked the beginning of Renaissance literature in Spain, as the three main protagonists adopt the style normally associated with clowns. As well as adding a touch of humour, this technique makes the work easy to associate with and entertaining for all members of the public.
The performance at the Teatro Vico in Jumilla on Sunday 30th November begins at 19.00 with tickets priced at 4, 6 and 8 euros and available online here.
