New landscaped green area planned at key entrance to Lorca Castle
Work is already underway to transform the unused land close to the church of San Juan
A neglected patch of land in Lorca is set for a major makeover with plans to turn it into a beautiful green space right next to one of the city’s best-known landmarks.
The project focuses on a plot at the roundabout by the Church of San Juan, close to Lorca Castle, and aims to transform what is currently an unused and run-down area into an attractive landscaped space.
The work is being funded by the EU through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, backed by Next Generation EU funds.
Led by Lorca City Council’s Department of Development and Local Promotion, the scheme is designed to improve the look of one of the main access points to the castle, while also making better use of land that has been sitting idle.
Councillor for Local Development Rosa María Medina said the project forms part of a wider push to reclaim underused areas across the city. She explained that the aim is to create “a more accessible city model that respects our historical heritage”, adding that the changes will help strengthen the link between green spaces and Lorca’s historic surroundings.
The site covers around 500 m² and work is already underway, with completion expected within two months. The total investment stands at just over €28,200.
Initial work includes clearing vegetation, preparing the ground and carrying out archaeological supervision. The space will then be developed into a landscaped area with different levels, using stepped walls, along with new paving, fencing and planting.Trees and shrubs will be added, alongside lighting, irrigation systems and information signs. Protective measures will also be put in place for any archaeological remains in the area.
Ms Medina added that the project will create “a more pleasant, safe and attractive environment” in what is a key part of the city, both for residents and visitors.
Councillor for Culture Santiago Parra also welcomed the plans, saying the project will improve one of the main entrances to Lorca Castle and better integrate the surrounding urban space with its historical and archaeological setting.
He explained that this should lead to a stronger visitor experience and help reinforce the area’s role as a cultural landmark.
