Murcia photo of the month October 2025

Here’s the top image of the month taken by the Los Alcázares Digital Camera Club (LADCC)

Flight was the competition theme last month and, unsurprisingly, photos taken at ‘Aire25’ proved very popular with our photographers. Unfortunately, none of them won the competition but, as a reminder of the wonderful air display held in San Javier in June this year, these photos can be viewed on the scrolling bar above.

The winning two photos pictured somewhat smaller ‘flight’ images! Our members were given quite a tight brief on what they had to photo, as the word ‘flight’ can be interpreted in many different ways - flights of fancy, a flight of stairs and even a flight (sampling) of wines or beers for example. However, for this brief, members were given the following interpretation: “an object in flight is any object that is moving through the air or space, typically after being launched, thrown, propelled or released, and is not in contact with the ground or a solid surface”.

Gary Hull once again managed to conquer the brief with a spectacular photo of a male Amegilla bee also known as a ‘digger bee’ which he took in Los Alcázares. Bees move incredibly quickly and are not known for their willingness to sit still for a photographer and hence the skill and technique shown by Gary was acknowledged by the members in their voting. Hiding in bushes close to his home he used a 2000th of a second shutter speed which enabled him to get a pin sharp photo of the bee but with some blur of the wings showing it was in flight. The exposure too was toned down on the beautiful coloured flowers as Gary didn’t want the viewer to focus on these, but principally the bee in flight.

Debra Duncan took second place with another amazing photo entitled ‘White-tailed Eagle’. Debra took this on a recent trip to the Isle of Mull in Scotland, whilst visiting the island with another group of like-minded photographers. The white-tailed eagle is one of the largest birds of prey in the UK with a wingspan of over 2m and is often given the nickname of ‘the flying barn door’! However, this wonderful photo highlights the flight and precision of this beautiful bird, with its eyes totally focused on its unfortunate prey.

I’m sure you’ll agree that both of these stunning images wouldn’t look out of place on the pages of any photography or natural history magazine!

This proved a great monthly topic for the members which resulted in a higher than average monthly score for the group, thus suggesting that either our photography is improving or that ‘Flight’ was an easier topic!! Members of course will argue the former!!

With the club’s next monthly topic being ‘Abstract’ it will be interesting to see what unusual photos the group can come up with. Word from the inside is that it is already proving a challenging topic title for the group!

This popular club usually meets twice a month, at the Las Claras Centre in Los Alcázares, on the first Tuesday of every month and, often, an outing toward the end of the month, where the group gets together to collectively work on the topic for the monthly competition. With modern day technology we can all keep in contact for training sessions, sharing knowledge etc via ‘group chats’.

We are interested in hearing from anyone who would like to join us when the opportunity arises. You will be put on a waiting list and be contacted when a space becomes available. If you would like more information about the Club please do not hesitate to look at our website,
www.ladcc.es, or email us at informationladcc@gmail.com.
