Murcia families lean on electricity voucher as bills hit €85 a month
Over 71,000 households now benefit from the social bonus amid rising energy costs
If your electricity bills are feeling the pinch in Murcia, you are not alone. New figures show the Social Electricity Bonus is helping more than 71,000 households here keep the lights on and basics running. That is 71,271 people in total who rely on this discount, according to energy experts at Papernest.In the Region of Murcia, it comes down to 449 households per 10,000 inhabitants needing the aid. Put another way, around 4.5% of us are turning to this support just to manage everyday power use at home. And with Murcia city boasting one of Spain's highest bills at about €85 a month (thanks to Hello Watt data), it is no wonder. That kind of expense can really squeeze family budgets.
What stands out is how tough things are for many. Over half the beneficiaries, 50.8% or 36,772 people, are listed as “severely vulnerable”. Papernest notes this flips the usual pattern, with the hardest-hit cases making up most of the support.
Large families are also in the picture here, accounting for 33.6% of recipients. That is higher than elsewhere, even though income qualifies most at 60.7%. But heads up, a government plan could change things by making large families prove low earnings instead of getting automatic help. That might touch a lot of homes in Murcia if it passes.
