Murcia city gears up to launch its Low Emission Zone amid regional green push
Pedestrian-friendly streets, traffic calming, and park-and-ride are key parts of the plan to reduce pollution and improve city life
Following the lead of nearby Cartagena earlier this year and Lorca back in last November, the city of Murcia is moving forward with plans to introduce its own zona de baja emisione (low emission zone) aimed at cutting pollution and encouraging sustainable transport. With just under two months until the set implementation deadline, the city faces a tight schedule to complete the necessary actions.Some central streets like Alfonso X El Sabio and Trapería have already been pedestrianised, winning praise from locals and visitors who enjoy the greener, cooler spaces filled with plants and new street furniture. Meanwhile, on roads still open to vehicles, traffic calming measures such as raised crossings and narrowed lanes will improve safety and discourage driving in the heart of the city.
To compensate for fewer parking spots downtown, Murcia plans to set up park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts. These will connect travellers with public transport, bike lanes, and shared mobility options, echoing successful models seen in cities like Madrid.
The well-used Plaza Circular interchange is set to become a key zone for balancing traffic flow, safety, and air quality across several busy neighbourhoods. Data on traffic and resident habits will help fine-tune restrictions and measures over time.
The city council’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS) underlines the importance of a phased, well-regulated transition. The local government approved an alternative proposal in September with strong support from the PP party but faced criticism from PSOE and Vox, who worry about the short timeline and lack of project details.
Councillors assure residents that the plan will be rolled out gradually, aiming for a positive, lasting impact on Murcia’s environment and quality of life.
