More than 60 lifeguards on the beaches of Aguilas this summer
Meet the 60 lifeguards who will be ensuring safety on the beaches this July and August
The Region of Murcia Beach Surveillance and Rescue and Sea Rescue Plan (COPLA) has been launched, a programme which will provide surveillance and rescue services on the beaches of
Águilas in summer 2024.
The Plan was presented this morning, July 1, on the Esplanade of the Auditorium in Águilas. The Councillor for Civil Protection, José Luis Moreno, did concede that “although the first phase of COPLA began on June 15, the date from which 23 lifeguards have provided coverage to four beaches in the town, it is now when the device is considerably expanded.”
The system, coordinated by the Municipal Service of Civil Protection and Emergencies of the Águilas Town Council, with the collaboration of the Local Police, Civil Guard, Maritime Rescue, Red Cross, 061 and the Fire and Rescue Consortium, has 60 lifeguards distributed across 14 lifeguard posts, plus an all-terrain vehicle to assist in the surveillance and lifeguarding of those beaches which do not have a fixed surveillance post within the municipality of Águilas.
All the beaches are cardio-protected, meaning they have semi-automatic external defibrillators, and all of the staff are trained in defibrillation techniques.
There are also three rescue boats, plus a fourth in reserve, which are responsible for covering the entire coast of Águilas.
As was the case last year, a total of four beaches in the town will also have so-called ‘amphibious’ chairs, as well as other aids to help people with reduced mobility to go into the water and to enjoy the beach comfortably.
One new feature this year is that the
Playa del Matalentisco beach, which is considered to be one of the riskiest, will have one more lifeguard than usual. The same will happen at the
Playa del Poniente, which has an extra lifeguard because it is so long.
