Mercadona opens brand new store in the Region of Murcia
The state-of-the-art Totana supermarket will replace an old Mercadona, which the company says failed to meet standards
Mercadona unveiled its newest supermarket in the Murcia town of Totana on Monday June 16. The new store, located on Calle Hondales, represents a substantial €6.7 million investment that brought together 60 suppliers, predominantly from the
Region of Murcia, creating employment for 120 people during the construction phase.
The opening coincides with the closure of Mercadona's previous Totana location on Mallorca 5, which company sources indicated no longer met their evolving operational standards.
Mercadona has long been the favourite supermarket of Murcianos, but fellow
Valencian chain Consum is emerging as a strong competitor. The cooperative is planning to open three news stores in the region of Murcia in the coming months: one in Murcia city, one in Cartagena and another in Caravaca de la Cruz.
The new Totana supermarket embodies Mercadona's innovative Efficient Store Model, a comprehensive approach designed to enhance the shopping experience for customers, employees, suppliers and the broader community.
The supermarket spans more than 1,800 square metres of sales area and features a completely renovated design that prioritises both functionality and aesthetics.
One of the most striking features is the store's emphasis on natural light and open spaces, complemented by warm colour schemes that create distinct environmental zones throughout the shopping area.
The new entrance incorporates double glazing technology to eliminate drafts, while wider aisles ensure customers can easily navigate the store. Perhaps the biggest change is that the new location includes an in-store dining area, allowing customers to enjoy their purchases in comfort.
Mercadona's Efficient Store concept includes measures that facilitate employees' daily tasks, improving ergonomics and eliminating overexertion. This is the case with the checkout counter, for example, developed in collaboration with the Valencia Institute of Biomechanics.
The store also features common areas for employees to enjoy greater comfort during their breaks, as well as a better equipped dining room and larger, more comfortable personal lockers. For much more efficient energy management, the store features a photovoltaic solar panel installation on the roof, which has resulted in a 20% saving in electricity consumption.
Furthermore, Mercadona's Efficient Store is fully technologically connected, integrating a series of electronic devices and collaborative tools for employees, enabling them to share information from any section of the store. This facilitates self-management for each supermarket and streamlines processes across the entire chain.
This supermarket is open Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 9.30pm and has a car park with 205 spaces, 5 of which are for electric cars.
