Mazarrón unveils new birdwatching hides at Moreras wetlands
Officials hope the new facilities will help bring year-round visitors to the Bolnuevo coastline
Mazarrón has expanded its nature tourism with the opening of two new birdwatching observatories at the Moreras wetlands in Bolnuevo.
The new facilities have been created in the lagoons of the Rambla de las Moreras near its mouth, in an area that previously formed part of an old wastewater treatment site. The land has since been restored to its natural state as part of an environmental project funded by the European Union.
The aim of the new viewpoints is to appeal to different types of visitors, with one observatory designed for families and casual wildlife watchers and another aimed at photography enthusiasts looking for a more immersive experience.
The family-focused hide features seven viewing windows and is equipped with a telescope, making it easier for visitors to observe birds without disturbing the surrounding habitat. A second semi-submerged observatory has been built within one of the lagoon pools, offering closer access for nature photographers.
According to Mazarrón Town Hall, the investment forms part of the municipality’s broader tourism sustainability plan, which also includes improvements to walking routes such as the Bolnuevo coves trail.The Moreras wetlands, close the prehistoric remains on the Cabezo del Plomo, have become an increasingly important stopover point for migratory birds travelling between Africa and Europe. Municipal technician Juan Sánchez Calventus has highlighted the presence of more than 80 bird species in the area, which benefits from several environmental protection designations.
Local officials, including Mayor Ginés Campillo and Councillor Andrés Aznar, have said the new facilities are designed to strengthen Mazarrón’s appeal as a year-round destination, encouraging visitors to explore beyond the summer beach season and discover the area’s natural environment.
