March 13 and 14 La Moza de la Dehesilla light opera in Jumilla
This work by Julián Santos deals with Easter Week traditions in the town of Jumilla
Julián Santos Carrión, who was born in Jumilla in 1908, was a musician and composer who gained renown during the 20th century despite being largely self-taught other than receiving the influence of his father, also a musician. He began writing his own pieces at the age of just 12 and by 1924 had already composed his first operetta, “Sueño de Niña”.
The work featured in these two concerts by the lyrical ensemble named after him is “La Moza de la Dehesilla”, which Santos composed in 1946, a few years after he returned to Jumilla following a time in the city of Murcia coinciding with the Spanish Civil War. Although he originally entitled it “Domingo de Panes Jumillano”, it is a “zarzuela” light opera dealing with the period between “Bread Sunday” and Good Friday in the town of Jumilla, and borrows heavily from the tales of popular local folklore, with additional lyrics by Rafael Soria.
The two performances at the Teatro Vico both begin at 21.30 with tickets priced at 15, 20 and 30 euros.
