Sorry to be the bearer of bad news drivers, but the traffic authorities in Spain have introduced yet another thing you can be fined for: leaving your car window open. It may sound trivial, but it’s certainly not something to be taken lightly, as it could cost you a whopping €1,500.
Although it’s not a very popular rule, it’s one that’s being enforced more rigorously across the country, especially with the warmer weather approaching. So, why is this happening and how can you steer clear of trouble?
Why is this even a thing?
In spring and autumn, it’s pretty common for drivers to roll down the windows instead of blasting the A/C. It feels more natural and it saves on fuel. But if you forget to roll them back up when parking, especially in public or unattended areas, you might end up with more than just fresh air.
Leaving your car unlocked or with a window down makes it an easy target for theft. That’s the main reason behind the fines, which vary depending on local laws. Some towns have already started issuing fines of up to €1,500 for cars parked with open windows, no matter how small the gap.
If you own a camper, caravan or motorhome, the rules are even stricter. In many places, you can’t park with the windows open or with anything extended, like awnings or ladders, unless it's a roof vent that’s specifically designed for ventilation.
Spain’s not alone in this. For example, in Italy, parking with your windows down can cost you €180. There’s no universal rule across Europe, so it’s always worth checking local regulations before you travel.
