Landslide brings down old wall on Cabo de Palos coastline
Heavy rain is blamed for the collapse of a deteriorating concrete wall along the planned Sendero Azul coastal walking route

An old wall has collapsed on the Cabo de Palos coastline following heavy rain, raising questions about the condition of the area as plans for a new coastal walking route remain on hold.
The concrete-block structure, topped with a wooden railing, fell after the ground around it had reportedly weakened. According to locals, the wall was already in place before work on the Sendero Azul project began and was not part of the new walkway.
They also say the condition of the area had previously been brought to the attention of technicians, who had passed the information on to the coastal authorities.
The incident comes at a time when work on the Sendero Azul route has yet to resume. Construction was paused over the summer to avoid disturbing residents and visitors during the busiest months, with work expected to restart afterwards. However, no further work had begun by Wednesday, October 21.

The project is intended to improve the coastal route from Plaza del Muro de la Sal towards the lighthouse, with the first phase reaching the Cañonero area. Plans include improvements for pedestrians, places to enjoy the sea views and lighting built into the ground.
The residents' association has supported the scheme, arguing that it would help restore a deteriorated stretch of coastline and make it easier to enjoy on foot. Some residents have opposed the plans, however, particularly over concerns about losing parking spaces.
The first phase is expected to cost more than €300,000, while extending the route to the lighthouse will depend on securing further funding.
