July 8 to 21 Ancient firearms exhibition in Yecla
Armas de los Siglos XVI y XVII at the Casa Municipal de Cultura in Yecla
The Asociación Siglo de Oro in Yecla, which was formed in 2022 and takes an interest in all things historical, particularly the reenactment of events and scenes from the 16th and 17th centuries, is holding an exhibition of firearms dating from the “Siglo de Oro” period between July 8 and 21.
The town of Yecla proudly maintains a loving relationship with arquebuses, which play a prominent part in the annual Fiestas Patronales every December (where earplugs are indispensable for those enjoying the spectacle as hundreds of gunshots are fired into the air during the processions!), and this exhibition has been created partly because of the interest it is bound to hold for locals. But of course visitors are also welcome to take the opportunity to admire numerous weapons (mostly faithful replicas built to the same specifications as 400 or 500 years ago).
All of the items on display were made by local craftsmen in Yecla.
The poster for the exhibition shows a scene from the Battle of San Marciano, which took place in Tuscany on August 2, 1554, and comes from a painting by Giorgio Vasani which now hangs in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.
The exhibition “Armas de los Siglos XVI y XVII” can be visited at the Casa Municipal de Cultura in Yecla (alongside the Cayetano de Mergelina archaeological museum, Calle España, 37, click for map) on weekdays from 19.00 to 21.00 and at the weekend from 10.00 to 13.00.
If visiting Yecla don’t forget to make sure one of your first ports of call is the tourist office (Plaza Mayor, 1, email turismo@yecla.es, telephone 968 754104).
