July 16-August 23 Cirque du Soleil returns to Alicante
The Big Top is back on San Juan Beach in Alicante this summer
Cirque du Soleil is coming back to Alicante this summer and this time around it's bringing KURIOS, Cabinet of Curiosities, a show that has wowed more than six million people across 40 cities since it premiered in Montreal back in 2014.
The Big Top will be set up on San Juan Beach from July 16 to August 23, giving audiences nearly six weeks to catch what promises to be one of the cultural highlights of the summer.
This is the Canadian company's sixth visit to Alicante and the city clearly holds a special place in its affections. Itxaso Barrios, Cirque du Soleil's International Markets Marketing Manager, said the company was "delighted to bring KURIOS to Alicante. It's a very special moment for the company; returning to this city, which always welcomes us with such warmth and anticipation, with this production fills us with emotion."
She added that KURIOS is "a show with so much energy that you can't help but leave the Big Top with the feeling that anything is possible."
Alicante's Councillor for Culture, Nayma Beldjilali, was equally enthusiastic about the return, pointing to what it means for the city's cultural standing.
She noted the "importance of a company like Cirque du Soleil continuing to choose Alicante to showcase the magic of its shows, as it places us on the cultural circuit where our city deserves to be and where it is establishing itself."
Beldjilali also highlighted the broader appeal, describing Cirque du Soleil as "a major tourist attraction" that "always generates excitement and anticipation", with thousands of spectators filling the Big Top each time it visits.
As for the show itself, KURIOS takes audiences into the mechanical laboratory of a scientist who believes a hidden world exists just out of sight, one where the wildest ideas and grandest dreams are waiting to be discovered. Once he opens the door, time stands still and a cast of extraordinary characters floods his cabinet of curiosities, bringing his creations to life in a steampunk-inspired universe where, according to the company, "the unexpected lurks around every corner."
The result, as more than three thousand performances across the world have demonstrated, is a celebration of imagination that leaves people of all ages lost for words.
The Alicante dates are part of a wider Spanish tour also taking in Seville, Bilbao, Malaga, Barcelona and Madrid.
