January 23 to April 14 Exhibition of Nursing Madonnas in Águilas
Las Vírgenes de la Leche at the Casa de la Cultura Francisco Rabal in Águilas
The local Breastfeeding and Child-rearing Association of Águilas is holding an exhibition of artistic representations of the Nursing Madonna at the Casa de la Cultura in Águilas until 14th April, open from 9.00 to 14.00 and 16.00 to 21.00 on weekdays.
Images of the Virgin Mary breastfeeding Baby Jesus were fairly common in paintings until they fell into disfavour with the Catholic Church on the grounds of impropriety after the Council of Trent in the mid-16th century. However, they continued to be popular in the Eastern Orthodox church in Greece and Russia while in western Europe the whole subject of breastfeeding became taboo, with the middle and upper classes often handing such duties over to nannies.
For more local events, news and visiting information, contact the tourist office of Águilas (telephone 968 493285) or go to the home page of Águilas Today.
