Isla Plana students roll up their sleeves for annual beach clean-up
Students from CEIP Puig Campillo, Cartagena, spent the day cleaning their local beach and learning about protecting the marine environment
Students from CEIP Puig Campillo in Isla Plana swapped the classroom for the coastline on Wednesday June 17 as they took part in their annual beach clean-up ahead of the busy summer season.
The activity, held as part of the initiative “Environmental Day: From the Blue Trail to the Clean Sea”, saw pupils heading to the shore to help remove litter and learn more about the importance of protecting the local environment.
The day also included a special moment at San Ginés beach in La Azohía, where the students helped raise the Blue Flag, one of the most recognised awards for beach quality, environmental management and safety.
Joining them for the day were Cartagena's Councillor for Coastal Areas, Álvaro Valdés, and the president of the local municipal board, Ana Agustina Martínez, who both praised the youngsters for their efforts.The clean-up has become something of a tradition for the school, with pupils taking part each year in the weeks leading up to summer. As thousands of visitors prepare to head to the coast, the initiative gives children a hands-on opportunity to help care for the beaches on their doorstep.
During the visit, local officials also highlighted the work being carried out by Cartagena City Council to improve bathing areas and facilities along the municipality's coastline.
Teacher Ana Isabel Barruetabeña commended the students for their commitment to the project and the pride they take in looking after their local beach.While the amount of litter collected may only be a small contribution in the grand scheme of things, the lesson behind the activity is much bigger. By helping to keep Isla Plana's coastline clean, the pupils are learning that protecting the environment starts with small actions close to home.
