Free museum entry in Cartagena during Carthaginians and Romans festival
Costume, culture and history all come together for an unforgettable celebration

Who doesn’t love something for free, especially when it means you also get to dive right into
Cartagena’s history and enjoy some real local culture? This year, the Carthaginians and Romans festival is back and bigger than ever, running from Friday September 19 through to Sunday September 28. For anyone turning up in their Troops and Legions costume, there’s an extra treat: you’ll be welcomed into all the Port of Cultures interpretation centres and museums, absolutely free.
But that’s not all. Mark Friday September 26 in your diary - it’s a local holiday, and everyone in Cartagena, whether you’re a long-term resident or just passing through, can stroll straight into historic sites like the Roman Theater, the Molinete Roman Forum Museum, Casa de la Fortuna, the Punic Wall, Navidad Fort, Concepción Castle and the Civil War Shelters without paying a cent.
It’s a fantastic way to get to know the stories and spaces that make this city so special, especially since some of them played a starring role in the Second Punic War, which was fought between Carthage and Rome from 218 BCE to 201 BCE and lasted 17 years.
And don’t worry if you’re planning to make a bigger weekend of it. While the free entry covers all municipal museums and interpretation centres (during their regular hours), you’ll still need a ticket for things like the tourist boat, bus and panoramic elevator run by Port of Cultures.
There’s plenty more happening around town too. Every September weekend comes packed with events: look out for a fun children’s musical, bring the family for some activities, or book yourself onto one of the guided routes for a closer look at Cartagena’s rich past. Whether you’re arriving in costume or in regular clothes, there’s something for everyone.
Organisers say, “The spirit of the festival is all about bringing people together to celebrate our shared history and enjoy Cartagena’s incredible heritage.” It’s the perfect moment to make some memories, learn a little and enjoy a city that loves showing off its best side.
Thinking of getting involved? Grab a costume, invite your friends and family, and take advantage of these free days at some of Cartagena’s most fascinating museums and historical spots. There’s really no better way to kick off the autumn, and celebrate the city’s colourful past, than joining in the fun - and who knows, you might just learn something new along the way, too.
