February 19 Archaeology presentation about the Bronze Age burial ground of Pinar de Santa Ana in Jumilla
Unusual burial goods including decorative horse-riding equipment have been discovered at the 2,700-year-old site
The burial ground of El Collado y Pinar de Santa Ana in Jumilla was first discovered in modern times as long ago as the 18th century and dates from the Bronze Age and Late Iron Age (approximately 9th to 6th centuries BC), and in 2024 a new archaeological dig began to study both the structures and the funeral goods inside them.
The highlight is burial mound nº 9, where the items unearthed include an unusual equestrian harness decoration and other animal-shaped figures which may belong to other horse accoutrements.
This talk on the discoveries made at the burial ground on Thursday 19th February is given by Professor Álvaro Lorrio Alvarado of the University of Alicante at the Jerónimo Molina archaeology museum at 20.00 as part of a series of presentations concerning new archaeological findings in the municipality of Jumilla, and all members of the public are welcome to attend.
