The Air Force eagle soars over San Javier for all to see
A sculpture commissioned by the Air Force Officer Training Academy in San Javier has been restored and re-located
The sculpture of an eagle which for many years was a features of the Spanish Air Force officer training academy (AGA) in San Javier has now been full restored and installed outside the military complex, making it visible to the general public on the roundabout where Calle López Peña joins the RM-F34 road.
At an official presentation on Friday 14th August José Carlos García Verdugo, the son of the man who created the sculpture, described the event as the “rising of the Phenix”, while also praising the work of the restorers and the choice of location. The sculpture was originally commissioned in the early 1990s following a conversation between Colonel José Carlos García Verdugo Fernández Sanguino with the director of the academy, and now this iconic design is part of the heritage of the town as a whole.
It should be remembered that the image of an eagle is strongly associated with the military installations in San Javier: the air force aerobatics team which is based there is known as the Patrulla Águilas (“Eagle Patrol”), and spreads the fame of San Javier throughout Europe as the pilots take part in air displays all over the continent.
Also present at the unveiling was local Mayor José Miguel Luengo, who stressed the importance of displaying the eagle in public as a symbol of the historic relationship between the AGA and the town, which goes back over 80 years.
