Dead cow washed up at busy Torrevieja beach
Onlookers at Playa de La Mata were shocked by unexplained appearance of sea “moo”-nster
La Mata beach, Torrevieja
Beachgoers taking a dip at La Mata in Torrevieja alerted lifeguards on Wednesday July 30 after they saw a large object floating in the sea about a kilometre offshore.
Unable to tell what it was from that distance, they were worried that it might be a capsized kayak with people trapped inside, so two members of the team went to check it out as it was being moved closer by the waves.
Once it was ashore, they realised that it was actually the extremely decomposed carcass of a cow, which caused quite a commotion among the families and tourists on the crowded beach.
Some of the onlookers were shocked and disgusted, while others posted images of the grisly discovery on social networks.
The lifeguards alerted the town hall, which called in the local police and a clean-up team, who quickly removed the remains using an excavator truck in order to prevent any public health risk or panic.
The municipal lifeguard coordinator, Rubén García commented that as yet they have no idea where the animal came from.
