Church in Los Urrutias
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, Los Urrutias
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Los Urrutias is a building of unusual appearance which, while obeying all of the usual rules regarding design and structure in the Region of Murcia and the Costa Cálida, stands out as different due to the external finish, which is predominantly in grey stone. The effect of this is to create a place of worship quite different from those typical of this part of the shoreline of the Mar Menor, but nonetheless the building is a tidy and not unattractive one.
The church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen was inaugurated on 19th August 1928, when amid great celebrations the first Mass was held there, accompanied by a marine procession and fireworks. It appears that the idea for the building had first been put forward only the year before by Juan Bernal Segura, who always spent the summer in Los Urrutias and was popularly known as “Capitán Segura”. This individual took it upon himself to raise the necessary funds, and in 1928 assorted dignitaries from Cartagena and El Algar were among those present to see the church consecrated by archpriest Pedro Gambín. Music was provided by a string sextet and a military band from the 70th Infantry Regiment in Cartagena.
Mass times in winter are only on Sundays and religious holidays at 11.00, with more frequent services at the parish church in El Algar. Worshippers are of course also welcome at the nearby churches of Los Nietos and Los Alcázares.
