Cartagena rolls out extra lifeguard posts across its beaches ahead of peak summer
Several new beaches in Cartagena will get lifeguard services right through until mid-October
Lifeguard cover on beaches in the municipality of Cartagena has been in place since June 1, with posts already open in Mar de Cristal, Cala Cortina, San Ginés de La Azohía, El Portús and the La Manga beaches of Galúa, Sirenas and Entremares.
From Saturday June 13, several more lifeguard stations will join the service. These will cover Los Nietos, Calblanque, Levante in Cabo de Palos, and the La Manga beaches of Cavanna and Cala del Pino.
From that point, the service will have around 50 staff working from 11am to 7pm, including lifeguards, nurses, boat captains, drivers and Civil Protection assistants.
According to Álvaro Valdés, the councillor for the Coast, speaking from Cala Cortina, further lifeguard stations will open from July 1 until the end of August, extending cover across the whole beach area from east to west.During this peak period, the beach surveillance system will be running at full capacity, with around one hundred professionals on duty from 11am to 8pm.
The council confirmed that surveillance will continue right up until October 12, which marks the long weekend for the national holiday of El Pilar.The operation forms part of the regional government's Copla Plan, with the council also providing land and water resources including jet skis, boats, quad bikes and rapid response vehicles.
