Cartagena Port gets high-tech X-ray van for cruise passenger checks
Electric vehicle boosts security and sustainability with sharper scans and zero emissions
Cartagena Port Authority is gearing up with a new electric van fitted with cutting-edge X-ray tech to scan cruise passengers' luggage more efficiently and securely. The €228,690 investment replaces outdated equipment, ensuring compliance with port security rules amid growing cruise traffic. Port chief Pedro Pablo Hernández sees it as a win for both operations and the environment.The van promises deeper penetration for scans, crisper images and features tailored for night work, easing staff duties at the cruise terminal and other docks. "A strategic action that will strengthen port security, improve operational efficiency and advance the port's environmental commitment by investing in electric vehicles," APC sources explained. No more noisy generators: the electric setup cuts emissions and noise, while the old van gets refurbished for other jobs once its scanner is safely dismantled.
This fits into wider upgrades, like tendering a €7.26 million revamp around the Cruise Terminal. Plans include shaded rest spots, landscaped green roofs, a water feature for cooling, and a new 1,235 square metre gallery with the Cartagena Port Interpretation Centre, shops and accessible toilets. A shared path for walkers, cyclists and scooters will link it all, highlighting the Carlos III Wall heritage. Work should take 12 months.
Meanwhile, paving works are planned for San Pedro Dock's 19,000 square metre interior surrounds, budgeted at €299,501 plus tax over 19 months. These moves aim to make the port more competitive for logistics, safer for operations and better integrated with the city.
